The stage adaptation of Paranormal Activity, the influential found footage horror movie, is headed to Broadway later this year. This follows sold-out runs in London's West End, Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington, DC, and San Francisco.

Directed by Felix Barrett (Sleep No More) and written by Levi Holloway (Grey House), the production will have a limited 20-week engagement. It will begin on Friday, August 14, at Broadway's August Wilson Theatre, prior to its official opening on Thursday, September 15. The cast has not yet been announced.

The stage adaptation of Paranormal Activity is an original story that follows a new couple not featured in any of the movies. Here is what the synopsis says of the story: "James and Lou move from Chicago to London to escape their past, but they soon discover that places aren't haunted, people are. With an original story inspired by the film franchise, Paranormal Activity reimagines the modern ghost story with an intimacy that only live theatre can provide."

Additionally, Blumhouse founder and CEO, Jason Blum, who produced the first movie, has joined the theatrical production's producing team. Meanwhile, in a statement made to Deadline, Barrett said, “New York is my home away from home. I fell in love with the city when making Sleep No More fifteen years ago, and always marveled at the way audiences engaged with the show. Having seen the incredible responses to Paranormal as it has toured the US, I’m beyond excited that it will be coming to Broadway and cannot wait to see how New Yorkers react.”

Deadline also reported that the stage production will feature scenic and costume designs by Fly Davis (Caroline, Or Change 2021), illusions design by Chris Fisher (Stranger Things: The First Shadow), while Anna Watson (Giant) will handle lighting design and Gareth Fly (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child) will run sound design. Luke Halls (The Lehman Trilogy) will handle the projections design.

The original Paranormal Activity had its theatrical release in September 2009, following its rounds on the film festival circuit. The movie was made on a shoestring budget and currently has a lifetime gross of $107 million. The first movie sparked a global sensation and was one of the most profitable films in cinematic history. Paranormal Activity 2 did nearly as well as the first movie, with a current lifetime gross of $104 million.

Like The Blair Witch Project a decade earlier, Paranormal Activity popularized the found footage subgenre and also produced a lot of knockoffs. The first film, however, remains an effective and unsettling watch. It centers around a young couple, played by Micah Sloat and Katie Featherston. They're haunted by a supernatural presence inside of their home. They then set up a camera to document what's terrorizing them, and each night, the supernatural occurrences worsen, building towards a shock ending.

it was also announced this year that Paramount and Blumhouse are planning a new movie, with Undertone writer/director Ian Tuason set to write and direct.
