From Crystal Lake to Carrie, here are the horror series to watch this fall
Now that the Labor Day Weekend has come and gone, spooky season is in full swing, at least unofficially. For horror fans, this means we have plenty of new movies and TV series to look forward to. We already previewed the films we're looking forward to this season, which you can read here, but now let's look at a few TV series worth watching this fall and where to stream them.
Crystal Lake
It has been a painfully long time for those of us who love the Friday the 13th franchise and all things Jason. There hasn't been a new movie since the 2009 remake. Well, we're finally getting something new in the way of a prequel series titled Crystal Lake, which still stream on Peacock beginning October 15.
It's still unclear, due to the various lawsuits and copyright issues, whether or not adult Jason will appear in this series, but we do know it will follow Pamela Voorhees, played by Linda Cardellini, as she eventually seeks revenge against teenage camp counselors for letting her son drown. Cardellini is a great actress, so it'll be a heck of a lot of fun watching her spiral into a bloody quest for vengeance. Meanwhile, Callum Vinson will play young Jason, and in a recent interview with Polygon, showrunner Brad Caleb said, "But we don't skimp on the blood. When it hits and when it happens, hopefully it hits the audience because they've come to either empathize or fear for the characters in our story."
All eight episodes of Crystal Lake will stream on Peacock beginning October 15.
Carrie
Yes, there have already been multiple adaptations of Stephen King's novel Carrie. The most famous one is Brian De Palma's 1976 film, starring Sissy Spacek as Carrie White, the awkward and bullied teen who eventually uses her telekinetic powers to seek revenge. Mike Flannigan is a contemporary horror master, and he's already adapted Stephen King's work prior, specifically Gerald's Game, Doctor Sleep, and The Life of Chuck, so he's probably the perfect fit to take on King's classic novel.
In this version, Summer H. Howell plays Carrie, while Samantha Sloyan plays Margaret white, Carrie's uber religious and oppressive mother. In the age of social media bullying, it's probably time for a fresh take on Carrie, and we're excited to see where Flannigan takes the story.
Carrie will stream on Prime Video beginning October 7.
Below
Creature feature fans should put Below on their radar. It's a six-part miniseries for Netflix starring Josh Hartnett as Calvin Penney, a bitter and stubborn fisherman forced to protect his family and community from a mysterious sea creature. Besides Hartnett, the series also stars Mackenzie Davis, Charlie Heaton, Natasha Henstridge, Rohan Campbell, Ruby Stokes, and Joshua Close. This is a great cast, and the premise sounds intriguing.
Below premieres on Netflix on October 8.
American Horror Story: Season 13
By now, some horror fans likely tuned out of anything Ryan Murphy-related, including the last several seasons of American Horror Story. It's true that Murphy's programming has been more misses than hits lately, but AHS 13 warrants attention because it brings back several early season cast members to reprise their popular roles. This includes Emma Roberts as Madison Montgomery, Jessica Lange as Constance Langdon, Angela Bassett as Marie Laveau, Sarah Paulson as Cordelia Goode, Evan Peters as Kai Anderson, Jamie Brewer as Addie Langdon, and Mena Suvari as the Black Dahlia. Simply put, this is one hell of a cast that features beloved characters from Coven, Murder House, among other fan favorites.
It's unclear how, exactly, Murphy will merge these different characters and narratives from previous seasons, but we'll have to see. Hopefully, the newest season doesn't go off the rails, but even if it does, at least we have the return of Lange, Bassett, Roberts, and others to look forward to.
AHS: 13 will premiere on FX on September 24, with new episodes available on Hulu the next day.
